Thursday 26th June 2014 – Leadership Training! The Journey Continues ...
On Wednesday 25th June I left Birmingham
and travelled to Glasgow. I was staying at a Premier Inn in the city centre. After
a
good nights sleep I left my hotel at 7.30am. I walked to the station to
catch a
train to Mount Florida (A station I would really get used to). Then after
a little walk I arrived at the Hampden Park (the home of the Scotland
National Team).
First up in morning we had introduce ourselves to the rest of the group (about 15 of us). Then we watched a video that told us about how important role leaders will be during the games. We also learnt about different ways of making sure we were a great leader during the games!
We also in groups talked about leaders that had inspired us and learnt what to do at a team briefing that would happened at the start of each shift! We did a practice briefing in teams! We had to draw one up and then present it to another group! and giving feedback to group presenting back!
We also watched a video featuring Susan Boyle and how she was considered based on her age and background when auditioning for Britain's Got Talent. This was telling us that we need to be aware of the different people we will work with and meet and to act like everyone is the same!

Also after lunch we learnt about how to support our teams and making decisions using a four step process (Explore - Engage - Empower/Execute/Escalate - Evaluate). We also learnt how to end each shift by doing a briefing about how the shift went!
Finally we learnt about giving feedback and support to our team members. We were in groups of three and had to act out different scenarios within our groups (Each times we were a team member, a watcher or the team leader) using the STAR approach!
It
was a good training session and gave me confidence about being a leader at games time even if I took in a lot of information!
After a journey back to the city centre, it was time to go back home. So I took a bus back to the airport and then a plane back to Birmingham!
My next training sessions are in a couple of days time (Venue Training)!
